Having adopted a holistic approach in Watches & Wonders, IWC renewed all the Portugieser collection. The brand also updated the perpetual calendar function, which was included in this family in 2003, in accordance with the new rules of 2020, and integrated this function in the Perpetual Calendar 42 model of the Portugieser. As implied by the name of the model, the watch has a case diameter of 42 mm, and the main reason why this watch is produced with this specific size is one of the most important piece of information necessary to analyze the new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar. This size is preferred because it is the only case diameter that is compatible with the sizes of the automatic caliber 82650 used for the design of the watch. In this model, where a movement that belongs to the caliber 82000 family comes together, for the first time, with an IWC model with perpetual calendar function, it is also possible to view the caliber 82960 through the transparent caseback.
The movement offers a power reserve of 60 hours, and ensures that all the functions of the watch can be adjusted with a single crown. The date at 3 o’clock, the moon display with perpetual moon phase at 6 o’clock, and the day of the week at 9 o’clock are the configuration of the perpetual calendar displays on the dial of the watch. The new Portugieser Perpetual Calendar collection offers two different material options with stainless steel and 18 carat 5N. While the stainless steel version is completed with black Santoni alligator strap, the gold case design is offered with brown Santoni alligator strap. A third version, introduced as a boutique special edition with a diameter of 42 mm, is offered with a gold case, blue dial, and blue calfskin woven fabric strap for those who prefer the color blue, which is identified with the design of Portugieser. All the watches in the collection have a water resistance up to approximately 30 meters. These models that eliminate the requirement of touching the crown until the year 2100 constitute a collection that reminds us, in 2020, why the title “legendary” was included in the name of the watchmaker Kurt Klaus.
